V for Vendetta

By Alan Moore (art by David Lloyd)

Adult Fiction [FIC Moore]

I’d been hearing about V for Vendetta for years.  The movie came out when I was in college (though I didn’t see it), and I remember hearing that it was based on one of the “classics” of the relatively new genre of graphic novels.

Taking place in a post-nuclear-apocalyptic (but not too distant) future.  The creepily-smiling masked character known only as V has a score to settle with figures from his past and the all-too-complacent society in which he finds himself.

While some new to the graphic novel genre may think that the stories contained within the colored pages will be juvenile, the drastic measures V takes, as well as violence, language, and adult themes guide this novel for a more mature audience despite its format.

Recommended to readers of dystopian fiction and fans of the graphic novel format.

Review: The Lincoln Lawyer

The Lincoln Lawyer

By Michael Connelly (Little, Brown & Co., 2005)

Adult Fiction [Fic Conne]

I used to think that I didn’t like pop fiction, but I’m slowly changing my mind.  This book was almost impossible to put down.  I was pulled in by the premise of a lawyer who uses his car as his office (and the movie starring Matthew McConaughey), but this book is far more than a quirky, kitschy tale.  It’s a hard-hitting thriller that begins when lawyer Mickey Haller accepts a case to defend Louis Roulet against the charge of murder.

At first, Haller thinks he’s hit it big – Roulet is far richer than his normal clientele, but as he digs deeper into the case, Haller notices a few similarities to another case he worked, and he’s beginning to think that he wasn’t chosen to represent Roulet solely based on his reputation or resume.

Since the book is 6 years old, I’m guessing most fans of Connelly have already read this book, but I highly recommend it to mystery and thriller fans, as well as anyone who enjoyed the movie (although I haven’t seen it yet).
